STATISTICAL SURVEY OF THE ORTHOPEDIC PATIENTS OVER FORTY YEARS OLD


Abstract
The orthopedic patientsat the St. Mary¢¥s hospital during 1964 and 1968 were studied by recording:
1. Total number of orthopedic patients reported were 20,863. 5,269 patients at the out-patientclinic & 628 patients admitted to our dept. were beyond the age of forty.
2. Among all the orthopedic patients 25.2% were over forty years old. and as to be admitted case, the ratio of patients over 40 years old was 23.4%.
3. The admission rate of the patient over forty years old was 11.2%.
4. The frequent orthopedic diseases in these old patients were
1) chronic arthritis 875(16.6%)
2) frozen shoulder 494 (9.4%)
3) fracture & dislocation 19 (7.4%)
and that of the old patient abmitted to our department were
1) fracture & dislocation 214(33.1%)
2) trauma (soft tissue 115(18.3%)
3) chronic arthritis 83(13.2%)
5. Osteoarthritis of the knee and the spine was found among 53% and 28% of the patients respectively.
The incidence of the cases was generally higher in the females than in the males. The ratio was 2 to 1.
6. Frozen shoulder was found mostly in the group of the patient aged between 45 and 65 years. There is again a female preponderance in incidence of the diseases. The ratio was 2 to 3.
7. Beyond the age of forty years, fracture was occurred most frequently at spine, forearm and ribs.
8. A high percentage(46.5%) of lumbago patient showed no significant etiology.
